List Building & Lead Generation Mistakes#

The requirement of "email marketing" is to first build an (opt-in) email list.

This list is basically a database of peoples' email addresses that have subscribed to your email list via a web form.

These people subscribe usually in exchange for a free gift (aka lead magnet).

You as the list owner have permission to send these people periodic emails on the topic they are interested in.

When trying to build and grow your email list, keep the following in mind:

  • Present your subscription form prominently on your website and/or embed links to a dedicated opt-in/squeeze page within your content
  • You can create your own subscription form or squeeze page using your autoresponder's form builder (or use the ready-made pages from the UMV)
  • Share your squeeze page on social media (with the right people / on your profile)
  • Ideally, you're very clear on how people can benefit from subscribing and how often will you contact them
  • Make them know exactly what kind of information they will be receiving
  • Follow-up with your new subscribers immediately, deliver your lead magnet asap

Avoid These Typical Lead Generation Mistakes#

Avoid the following actions at all costs:

  • Don't spam, and always give people the option to unsubscribe
  • Don't purchase (lists of) leads. Do NOT buy email lists or "purchase opt-ins".
  • Don't automatically add everyone who has ever emailed you to your list. Always ask for permission first or focus on having them signing up via your squeeze/opt-in page.
  • Don't abuse people's trust (in you). This is the sure way to end your business. You might make a few sales through an aggressive campaign, but at what cost?
